A George III mahogany bracket clock dating from the late 18th century
c1795.
The twin fusee movement, with original verge escapement, has engraving
to the back plate and is signed G M Metcalfe, Londres. The clock
strikes on a bell on the hours and half hour and has pull repeat.
The white painted dial with strike, silent to the arch retains its
original ground and carries the makers name G M Metcalfe Londres
(London) would probably indicate that this clock was made for the
Spanish or French market, which was not uncommon during the period
of manufacture of this clock.
George Marmaduke Metcalfe is recorded as working at 122, Newgate
Street from 1794 to 1825.
