James Charles was a painter at first of portraits,
later mainly of landscapes and rustic genre. He studied
at Heatherleys School, at the RA Schools from 1872 and
in the Paris Academie Julian where he was influenced
by the plein-air movement. He exhibited at the RA from
1875 to 1906 and the National Gallery at the Paris Salon
1897-1905. He is one of the first to practice plein-air
in England.
This image is of a Hay Rick on a rainy day in Hastings
England and would have been painted in the landscape
and not a gallery. It is a very moody and atmospheric
painting, with detail to the rain in the distance. It
is the sort of painting that if you like it, it certainly
grows on you and the more you look at it, the more you
see in the painting. Or you simply do not like it?
The image size is 25" x 37" approximately and the frame
size is 33" x 45".
The painting has been re-lined in the last ten years,
with all the information on the back of the painting
saved on photograph. The frame is very good quality
and is in very good condition.
The price of the painting is £1800 including
delivery.
