Theude Gronland was a painter of still life subjects,
genre, flowers and fruits. He was born on August 31st
1817 in Altona. An inveterate traveller from an early
age, he was a student at the academy in Copenhagen,
on completion of his education he travelled to England
and Italy before settling in Paris, where he spent the
next twenty-five years. In 1868 he moved to Berlin,
living and working there for a number of years where
his work proved extremely popular. He produced works
of immense warmth, using a palette of rustic, yet vibrant
colours depicting his subject matter with detail and
great skill. He went on to exhibit his works in Copenhagen,
the Paris Salon, Berlin and at the Royal Academy in
London where he showed a total of seven paintings between
1849-1852. Titles included 'fruit and Flowers', 'Still
Life' and 'Flowers'. From addresses in both France and
London, He was awarded a first class medal at the salon
in 1848 and a second-class medal at the Exposition Unverselle
in 1855. Although his most respected and coveted paintings
are still life subjects, he was also an accomplished
portraitist and painter of Genre, employing the same
softness of touch and detail of these works, of which
' Interieur d'une echoppe de cordonnier' is one of his
better known. This skilfully constructed panel, of autumn
leaves and fruit arranged on a rocky ledge, featuring
a Blue Tit perched on a branch peering at a ripened
peach, is typical of the style that made Gronland's
name Employing clever use of light and shade, a palette
of warm greens, earth tones and yellow, the artist has
bought to life these inanimate objects and given them
shape and texture. It is a delightful picture that reminds
the viewer of the wonder of natures gifts bestowed upon
